Rooted & Written is a free program designed to help emerging writers of color refine their craft under the mentorship of established writers of color, as well as build relationships in the publishing industry. Published and unpublished writers of color are encouraged to apply. We welcome poetry, fiction, nonfiction, screenplay -- whatever your craft, we want to see it!

Faculty includes Vanessa Hua (bestselling author, A River of Stars), Shanthi Sekaran (author, Lucky Boy, a Library Journal and NPR best book of the year), Faith Adiele (PEN Open Book Award winner), Xandra Castleton (Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and film producer) and Irving Ruan (frequent contributor to The New Yorker), among others.

Participants will attend a series of classes at the Writers Grotto in San Francisco. The first set of classes will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21, and focus on craft. The second will follow a week later on Sunday, Sept. 29, with a focus on publishing. This will include an opportunity to meet literary agents.

At the end of the program, select participants will be invited to read their work at a Rooted & Written closeout party.

If you have questions, please email us at rootedwritten@gmail.com.

UPDATE: Due to scheduling conflicts with instructors, the second workshop date is now Sunday, Sept. 29 instead of Saturday, Sept. 28.
